Why I Hate Being Asked ‘Have You Tried…?’
The author expresses frustration with the question, “Have you tried…?” feeling it implies incompetence and is condescending. Instead of asking this, they suggest validating the person’s experience and offering support. Questions should reflect competence and motivation, focusing on what the individual plans to do next rather than the questioner’s comfort.
As if I am stupid, lazy, or masochistic!
While others may think they are being supportive, they fail to see how condescending this question really is.
When someone vents or complains to you, rather than ask a question that assumes they are incapable of problem-solving, unwilling to do the work of problem-solving, or content to suffer; validate how aweful the situation is.
And, if you must ask a question, if you must make it about you–your comfort, your need to feel/appear as though you are a good/kind person–ask them, “What are you going to do?” “What are you going to do next?” “Do you need help with this?” “What would help look like for you, right now?”
Treat them as though they are competent, motivated, and discontent to remain in misery.
And, remember, always: This is not about you!
- The post critiques the question “Have you tried…?” as condescending, implying the recipient is incompetent or unwilling to seek solutions, and urges responders to validate experiences first before offering help.
- Psychological research, including a 2025 qualitative study in chronic conditions, shows unsolicited advice often frustrates autonomy, heightens rumination, and increases emotional stigma for those venting about health struggles.
- In the author’s context of terminal illness and systemic neglect, the piece connects to her advocacy against invalidation, exemplified in related writings on family scapegoating and COVID-era condescension.
